Jakub Mlynář, Andreas Liesenfeld, Lynn de Renata Topinková, Wyke Stommel, Lynn de Rijk, and Saul Albert for Copenhagen multimodality 6 day: interaction with AI
The turn to multimodality and incarnation in interaction research have given a new terminology and representative scheme in key publications (Nevile 2015). At intersections between multidisciplinary areas, e.g. Ethnometodological and analytical conversation research (EMCA) explores human-AI interactions, social robots, and conversation user interfaces, such methodological changes are even more difficult to track. How do these approaches to the meticulous and naturalistic study of technologies in (and of) social interaction the key terms, scheme and practices that constitute AI as an area of technosocial activity? In the piece of the piece Emca wiki Bibliography, we try this emerging area and report on a bibliometric review of 90 relevant publications directly for AI (widely defined) EMCA studies including social robots and their components such as voice interfaces.
We have found that the most quoted works in the Corpus EMCA + AI are classic from the human interaction research (Garfinkel, Sacks, Schegloff, Goffman), including multimodality (Goodwin, Heath), human-machine interaction (Suchman), and STS (Latour). The most quoted texts are: Sacks, Schegloff and Jefferson’s (1974) “Fitting Card” (in 45% of items from Corpus), Garfinkel’s (1967) Studies (40%), and Suchman’s book (1987) (31%). Specifically dealing with the AI from an EMCA perspective, the 2018 Porcheron et al paper on the voice user interfaces is mostly quoted (11%). In addition, two other texts appear as a hubs citation: Alač’s (2016) and Pitsch et al documents. (2013) on social robots and incarnation. The study aims to provide a starting point for a discussion on how concepts such as incarnation, agency and interaction are divided, used and understood through the practice of academic citation.
