After an exciting weekend in Hungary, the MotoGP competition moves to one of the most iconic venues in the world championship calendar. Automotodrom Brno will once again host the Czech Grand Prix, and the situation in the general classification means that the upcoming weekend may turn out to be one of the most important points of the 2026 season. Marco Bezzecchi remains the leader of the championship, but behind him there is an extremely fierce fight for the title, in which Marc Marquez is also becoming more and more involved.
Brno is back on the calendar and delights fans again
The history of motorcycle racing near Brno dates back to the 1960s. Initially, competitors raced on street routes leading through nearby towns. In 1987, the competition was moved to the modern Automotodrom Brno, which remains one of the most characteristic tracks in the entire MotoGP calendar to this day.
The facility is 5,403 meters long and consists of 14 turns. Interestingly, its layout has remained virtually unchanged since its inception. Until 1991, the Czechoslovak Grand Prix was held here, and then – after a one-year break – the Czech Grand Prix was held regularly from 1993 to 2020.
Financial problems and a conflict between the track owner and the local authorities led to a break of several years. However, Brno’s return to the calendar in 2025 turned out to be a huge success. Over the three days, the competition was watched by over 219,000 fans, which was one of the best attendance results of the entire season. Sunday alone gathered over 95,000 fans.
Everything indicates that this year’s edition will also attract crowds.
Aprilia leads the championship, but the atmosphere is far from ideal
Although Aprilia comes to the Czech Republic as the leader of the general classification, the last few days have not been peaceful.
During the round at Balaton Park, Jorge Martin caused a collision in the first corner, which injured, among others, his team partner Marco Bezzecchi and Raul Fernandez from Trackhouse Racing.
The situation caused great emotions in the Italian team. Aprilia project director Massimo Rivola did not hide his nervousness and after the race banned the competitors from talking to the media. Bezzecchi himself did not hide his disappointment.
Martin apologized to all those affected, but the consequences remain serious. During the next race, the Spaniard will have to pass through the so-called twice. long lap.
Despite the tense situation, Aprilia has reasons for optimism. Bezzecchi was third in the main race and fourth in the sprint last year, while Martin finished seventh, returning from serious injuries suffered earlier in the season.
Marc Marquez joins the title fight again
One of the biggest topics ahead of the Czech GP remains the form of Marc Marquez.
During the last round in Hungary, the Spaniard achieved full points, winning both the sprint and Sunday’s race. Importantly, he did it after starting from pole position.
Since returning to racing after injury, Marquez has consistently toned down, but his performances show that he may be much more dangerous than he suggests. More and more experts are wondering whether the Ducati rider has just returned to the real fight for the world championship.
Brno is an extremely happy place for him. In 2025, he won both the sprint and the main race here, even though he lost his chance for pole position in qualifying after collapsing at the end of the session.
If he gets on the podium again, questions about his title chances will be even louder.
Ducati is counting on a strong weekend
Not only Marquez will represent Ducati in the fight for the top positions.
Francesco Bagnaia did not shine in Hungary, but he himself emphasized that Balaton Park is simply not one of his favorite venues. The situation in Brno is completely different, where it was very competitive last year. He won qualifying, and in the race he was just half a second short of the podium.
Fabio di Giannantonio is also counting on improved results. The Italian is still third in the overall standings, but the last few weeks have been particularly difficult for him due to a finger injury suffered after an incident with debris from Alex Marquez’s bike.
After the Hungarian Grand Prix, he underwent surgery and everything indicates that his form will gradually improve.
Pedro Acosta is looking for stability
Pedro Acosta remains one of the most unpredictable players of the current season.
During the round in Hungary, the Spaniard led the race for a long time and responded to Marc Marquez’s attacks several times. Ultimately, he didn’t manage to win, but he showed great potential.
However, KTM’s problem remains the unevenness of form. Just a week earlier at Mugello, Acosta was clearly lagging behind the leaders, but a few days later he was fighting for victory.
The competitor himself admits that it will be crucial to stabilize his performance on each track.
Honda with a new leader, Yamaha continues to disappoint
There is also an interesting situation among Japanese producers.
After the injury of Johann Zarco, Diogo Moreira, making his debut in MotoGP, became the unexpected leader of Honda. The Brazilian regularly scores points and took sixth place in Hungary – the best result in his career so far.
Luca Marini also performed well and recorded the best result of the season.
Joan Mir’s situation is much worse. The 2020 world champion has scored only 15 points so far and has already suffered eleven falls.
Yamaha has even more problems. Fabio Quartararo remains the manufacturer’s highest-ranked rider, but is only 15th in the overall standings. The Frenchman is increasingly publicly expressing frustration with the lack of progress in the project and does not hide the fact that he is looking forward to a change of colors after the 2026 season.
Important contract talks in the background
The Czech Grand Prix may turn out to be important not only from a sporting point of view.
After the 2026 season, most of the MotoGP contracts expire. Although many of the lineups for next year are already set, official announcements have not yet been published.
The reason remains the negotiations between the producers and Liberty Media regarding the future of the championship after 2027.
According to the latest information, the parties have reached an agreement that each team – regardless of factory or satellite status – will receive eight million euros annually from the organizer.
An additional reason for accelerating the talks are the tests of motorcycles scheduled for Monday, prepared according to the regulations in force from 2027. The machines will receive 850 cm³ engines, limited aerodynamics, will give up suspension lowering systems and will use Pirelli tires.
