The Yacine Adli saga has taken a fresh twist. After years of focusing on a potential career with the French national football team, the 25-year-old attacking midfielder now appears to be contemplating a new direction: joining the Algerian national squad.
Having come through the ranks at Paris Saint-Germain before stints with Bordeaux and AC Milan, Adli currently plies his trade in the Saudi Pro League with Al-Shabab FC. In recent months, he was adamant about his ambition to wear the French jersey, despite continued interest from the Algerian Football Federation.
Some of his previous comments, which were sometimes seen as clumsy, sparked confusion and criticism in Algeria. Adli himself now admits to a communication misstep. In an interview with SportTeam, he explained that he never intended to dismiss his roots, but was simply voicing his sporting goals based on his experience with France’s youth teams.
His stance has since evolved. Following a recent conversation with Vladimir Petković, the current Fennecs coach and former Adli manager at Bordeaux, the player now says he is open to a call-up. He even goes so far as to say that representing Algeria would be “a great source of pride.”
The former Milan midfielder also recalls that first contact with Djamel Belmadi was established back in 2022. At the time, he chose to delay any decision in order to focus on his club development.
