The privatization of Górnik Zabrze is finally coming to an end. After years of prolonged talks, the club may end up in the hands of Lukas Podolski, and the city authorities argue that the contract has been prepared to protect the most important interests of Górnik, the stadium and youth training.
Górnik Zabrze is close to changing ownership
Górnik Zabrze can end the season not only with sporting success, but also with a decision that will affect the future of the club for years to come. The privatization process, which has been talked about for a long time, is at its final stage.
The 14-time Polish champion is to be taken over by Lukas Podolski. It would be a symbolic moment for the fans, because the world champion has been emphasizing his attachment to Zabrze for years and actively participates in the club’s life.
What are the conditions for taking over Górnik?
According to the disclosed assumptions, Podolski is to take over the club along with its financial obligations. According to the latest data, the debt amounts to approximately PLN 30 million.
The agreement also assumes recapitalization of Górnik Zabrze in the amount of PLN 12.5 million over three years. This is money that is intended to help the club stabilize and further develop. The document also provides for a grace period, i.e. the time during which the new owner will not be able to transfer the shares to another entity.
The city council will decide on the future of the club
The key moment is to be an extraordinary session of the city council. It is then that the councilors are to consent to the sale of Górnik shares by Zabrze. According to the announcement, the meeting may be held on May 20.
Lukas Podolski allegedly had some concerns about this stage, but the city president Kamil Żbikowski believes that there is no reason for the council to block the project. In his opinion, the contract is prepared in a way that suits the interests of the club and the city.
The city wants to protect the stadium and young people
The authorities of Zabrze emphasize that privatization does not mean abandoning responsibility for the club’s surroundings. The contract is to include provisions protecting the interests of the city company managing the stadium.
Youth training also remains an important element. This is an area that the city does not want to leave without guarantees, because the academy and the development of local players are an important part of Górnik’s identity.
The pressure from the fans is clear
After years of uncertainty, the expectation for the finalization of privatization is very high in Zabrze. The fans want the process to end and a clear vision for the club’s continued operation.
If the city council accepts the contract, Górnik Zabrze will start a new stage. Podolski will take over not only a prestigious brand with a rich history, but also responsibility for a club with great ambitions, demanding fans and financial challenges.
