Poland ended the European season in twelfth place in the UEFA ranking, which means tangible benefits for Ekstraklasa clubs. The good attitude of our teams meant that in the 2027/2028 competition, domestic football will have a more convenient path to the league stages. The most important thing is one thing: the Polish champion and the winner of the national cup will be guaranteed to play in Europe at least until the fall.
Poland is in twelfth place in the UEFA rankings
The 2025/2026 season in European cups has come to an end. The Conference League and Europa League were won by English clubs, Crystal Palace and Aston Villa, while Paris Saint-Germain won the Champions League for the second time in a row. The Parisians defeated Arsenal on penalties and prevented the English from winning all European trophies.
However, the final decisions did not change the most important information from the Polish perspective. Poland maintained twelfth position in the UEFA ranking with 46,750 points. This is a result that gives Ekstraklasa clubs a better starting position in the 2027/2028 season.
What gives Poland twelfth place?
The biggest benefit is the certainty that at least two Polish clubs will participate in the regular phase of European competitions. The Polish champion will start the Champions League qualifiers with the play-off phase. If he loses, he will not end his adventure with Europe, but will go to the Europa League.
The winner of the Polish Cup will receive similar comfort. This team will start in the Europa League play-offs and, if defeated, will be relegated to the Conference League. This is a huge change, because Polish clubs have had to go through a much longer journey over the years, often with a high risk of being quickly eliminated.
Five Polish clubs in the cups
Twelfth place also means more representatives. Poland will be able to field five teams in European cups. In addition to the national champion and the winner of the Polish Cup, the runner-up, the third or fourth Ekstraklasa team and another team from the league will also play in the qualifying rounds.
In practice, this means a wider opening of the European path for top clubs. Some will fight for the Champions League, others for the Europa League or the Conference League. However, the most important thing will be to maintain good points, because the advantage over rivals from the next places is not large enough to allow for weaker seasons.
Poland is better than many strong leagues
In the single-season classification, Poland took seventh place with 15,750 points. Only the top European leagues scored better: English, Spanish, German, Portuguese, Italian and French.
This means that Polish clubs performed better than teams from the Netherlands, Belgium, Turkey, the Czech Republic or Greece. It is these countries that Ekstraklasa will compete with in the coming years to maintain or improve its position in the overall ranking.
UEFA post-season rankings
The top of the overall ranking looks like this:
- Anglia – 119,519
- Italy – 99,946
- Spain – 97,046
- Germany – 92,901
- France – 83,498
- Portugal – 73,166
- Netherlands – 67,929
- Czech Republic – 48,525
- Greece – 48,412
12. Poland – 46,750
13. Dania – 42,106
14. Norway – 41,237
15. Cyprus – 35,693
Ekstraklasa has been given an opportunity that should not be wasted
Twelfth position in the UEFA ranking is a great success for Polish football, but also a liability. A better start in the qualifying rounds may translate into more money, higher prestige and easier building of clubs ready to play regularly in Europe.
The coming seasons will show whether Ekstraklasa can take advantage of this moment. Poland has made an important step, but now it must be defended. In the European cups, every point will be important, because behind them there are countries that are also fighting for more advantageous places when dividing the cup paths.
