Spain suffered a shocking 0-0 draw against debutants Cape Verde in Monday’s World Cup clash extending a bizarre 16 year tournament curse.
Monday’s group stage fixture at World Cup 2026 will go down in history but for all the wrong reasons for the Spanish national team. Facing tournament debutants Cape Verde, the former champions completely lacked creativity in the final third.
They failed to find a way past veteran goalkeeper Vozinha who pulled off several vital stops to secure a historic, celebrated point for the African nation in their first ever World Cup match.

The staggering post 2010 numbers
While Cape Verde celebrates, the result shines a harsh spotlight on a worrying trend for Spain. Ever since Andres Iniesta’s iconic extra time winner secured the trophy in South Africa back in 2010, the team has completely lost its edge on the global stage.
Across the last 4 World Cup tournaments, they have managed to win just three matches in total.
Those isolated victories came against Australia (3-0) during a failed 2014 campaign, a narrow 1-0 win over Iran in 2018 and a massive 7-0 thrashing of Costa Rica in Qatar 2022.
Aside from those rare nights, the Spanish side has consistently struggled to finish off opponents.
Six draws & knockout heartbreaks
The statistics show a clear identity crisis. Since their golden era ended, the European powerhouse has suffered three tournament defeats, getting dismantled by the Netherlands and Chile in 2014 and falling to Japan in 2022.
Even more telling are the 6 draw they have picked up along the way. Two of those stalemates famously led to immediate elimination in the Round of 16 where they were sent packing on penalty shootouts by hosts Russia in 2018 & Morocco in 2022.
The familiar curse of passing without purpose
This chronic inability to win matches heavily echoes the infamous “Champions’ Curse” that has haunted other modern football giants. For instance, after France lifted the trophy in 1998, they shockingly crashed out of the 2002 group stage without scoring a single goal.
Similarly, Italy won in 2006 only to finish bottom of their group in 2010 kicking off a dark era where they failed to qualify for multiple tournaments.
While Spain usually manages to navigate the group stages, their opening performance in North America proves that their possession heavy style still lacks the killer instinct needed to survive deep tournament runs.
If they cannot fix these structural attacking flaws, their 2026 campaign risks ending in another early disaster.
