Max Verstappen’s future in Formula 1 has once again become the subject of heated speculation. The Dutchman has been linked with a possible departure from Red Bull for months, and Mercedes seemed to be one of the natural destinations. According to the latest reports, the team from Brackley was even going to present the four-time world champion with an offer, but the offer did not impress him financially. In the background of the whole thing appears Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who is quickly becoming a new star of the field.

Max Verstappen got an offer from Mercedes?

Max Verstappen remains a Red Bull Racing player, but for a long time his future has not been as clear as it might seem. The Dutchman has signaled several times that not everything in the current direction of Formula 1 development suits him. These include regulations, technology and the format of race weekends.

In the previous months, there were increasing suggestions that Mercedes could try to take advantage of this situation. The interest in Verstappen was no secret, and additional emotions were caused by Toto Wolff’s meeting with the driver during his vacation in Sardinia. Now the topic has returned thanks to information provided by Ralf Schumacher.

Why should Verstappen reject the offer?

According to the former Formula 1 driver, Mercedes was actually supposed to open the door to Verstappen and present him with a cooperation offer. The problem is that the financial conditions did not meet the Dutchman’s expectations.

According to Schumacher, the offer was so low that it could not constitute a real basis for serious talks. In practice, this would mean that Mercedes has made a move, but not one that could convince one of the greatest drivers in F1 history to leave Red Bull.

Mercedes has a new star in the garage

The key piece to the whole puzzle is Andrea Kimi Antonelli. The nineteen-year-old Italian unexpectedly became one of the most important players of the 2026 season. Mercedes returned to the top, won six of the first seven rounds, and Antonelli has a series of four victories in a row.

The young driver leads the general classification and is 41 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton. He recently missed the Catalan Grand Prix due to a car failure, but his position in the championship remains very strong.

Does Mercedes really need Verstappen?

Mercedes remembers perfectly the period when Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg competed not only with opponents, but also within the team. That fight brought successes, but also enormous tensions.
