Magnus Hamann And I have written a provocation document for the third conference conference conference 2021.
In it, we argue (hopefully provocatively), that voice user interface designers should stop using wake words such as “Alexa” and “Hey Siri” who are designing each other from the hearing environment of the smart home. Our point is that, as interface elements, the words of wake are misleading for users who appear to treat them like a fully peeled interactive summons, when they are really slightly more than glorified buttons on “on”.
We got a surprisingly positive response from the technically inclined audience at the conference. I found it most surprising because the words of the resurrection are so everywhere and central to the marking and functionality of today’s voice interfaces that seems difficult to imagine being phased out in favor of something more prosaic.
