Nico Schlotterbeck’s World Cup dream ended on Monday 22 Jun after suffering a severe ankle injury during Saturday’s Group E victory in the United States.
A painful early exit
The Borussia Dortmund defender sustained the damage early in the 2-1 triumph over Ivory Coast. After struggling through the opening 45 minute, he was replaced at halftime by Real Madrid’s Antonio Rüdiger.
According to an official statement released by the German national team, medical scans on Sunday confirmed a torn medial collateral ligament in his left ankle, a blow that will sideline him for several months.

Because tournament regulations strictly prohibit calling up a replacement once the competition has begun, Germany must navigate the rest of the knockout stages with a 25 man squad.
Head coach Julian Nagelsmann expressed deep disappointment, specifically highlighting how much the team will miss Schlotterbeck’s exceptional ball-playing abilities from the back.
