Among the disputed moments, a dangerous chance for Harry Kane was ruled out for offside. Portuguese referee João Pinheiro (38 years old) was also singled out for not handing a second yellow card to Nuno Mendes despite a handball.

In comments relayed by journalist Kerry Hau, Bayern Munich CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen expressed his disbelief at the referee appointment:
“It is, to say the least, surprising that a referee with only around fifteen Champions League matches was put in charge of a game of this magnitude,” he declared, before adding: “That might explain some of the decisions made today.”
