According to Scotland coach Clarke, Napoli star Scott McTominay will be ready for the opening game against Haiti, something the country’s fans were certainly waiting for given the player’s importance and the excellent season he had in southern Italy.
The Scottish star had the greatest credit after scoring the most valuable goal from a historic bicycle kick last November 2025 4-2 win over Denmark, which sent his team to the World Cup for the first time since 1998.
Steve Clarke has moved to ease the burden on Scott McTominay ahead of the team’s Group C opener in Boston, insisting he will not place excessive pressure on the versatile former Manchester United star.
“I think I have got 26 superstars here. To try and put so much onto one person is not fair,” Clarke said. “We have built everything we have over the last seven years on the squad, the team, everybody being together and playing their part at certain times.”
McTominay has filled a variety of roles for Scotland over the years, but Clarke confirmed he will be deployed as an attacking midfielder at the World Cup.
“Some daft coach put him as a centre‑half five years ago, but obviously he is not a centre‑half,” he added.
Scotland will rely on McTominay’s energy and goal threat from midfield, but Clarke’s message is clear: this is a squad effort. No single player will carry the weight alone. For McTominay, the role he was always meant to play now awaits on the biggest stage of all.
