The Leśny Stadium in Sopot will once again become an arena of great sports emotions. The 28th Sopot Grand Prix will take place on June 14. Janusz Sidła, one of the most important athletics events in northern Poland.
Sopot will again attract leading athletes
The Sopot Grand Prix has held a special place in the national athletics calendar for years. This year’s edition promises to be exceptionally interesting, because the Leśny Stadium will host both recognized world-class stars and players fighting for passes to the most important international events.
A special attraction for Tricity fans will be the opportunity to see Jakub Szymański up close. The indoor world champion in the 60-meter hurdles is currently one of the biggest stars of Polish athletics. Everything indicates that this will be the only opportunity this year to see him competing live in the region.
Aleksandra Formella will fight for an important result
Aleksandra Formelli’s start is also attracting great interest. The SKLA Sopot athlete is preparing for the next representative challenges and is counting on a place in the 4×400 meters relay during the European Championships in Birmingham.
This time, however, fans will see her in a slightly different role. Although she is usually associated with the 400-meter run, in Sopot she intends to test herself over the 800-meter distance. The goal will be to fight for a valuable result and get closer to the individual qualifying minimum.
Fifteen competitions and a memorial to Janusz Sidło
The competition program includes a total of fifteen competitions. These will include, among others, the prestigious women’s 800-meter race held as the Amber Mile. Elżbieta Duńska-Krzesińska.
There will also be a memorial competition dedicated to Janusz Sidle. The Sopot meeting has been named after him for years, reminding us of one of the greatest Polish athletes in history.
Sidło was Olympic vice-champion in Melbourne, two-time European champion and the first European to exceed the 80-meter barrier in javelin throw. For years, he represented a club operating in the Tri-City under the banner of Sbójnia Gdańsk, and his achievements remain an important part of the history of Polish sport to this day.
Young talents will show themselves in front of their own audience
The meeting will not be intended only for recognized players. As part of the Pomeranian Olympic Hopes project, the region’s most talented track and field athletes under 16 will also perform on the track and in the technical sectors.
For many young athletes, it will be a unique opportunity to compete in the atmosphere of a large event and show their skills in front of a large audience.

Over a quarter of a century of great athletics
The history of the Sopot meeting dates back to the mid-1990s. Since then, Leśny Stadium has hosted the greatest stars of world athletics many times.
It was here that fans watched, among others, the excellent performances of Artur Partyka, who overcame a height of 2.36 meters in the high jump, and Igor Potapowicz, who pole vaulted at a level of 5.80 meters. The legendary Wilson Kipketer, one of the greatest 800-meter runners in the history of this competition, also competed in Sopot.
In the following years, many world stars visited the Leśny Stadium, thanks to which the event became a permanent part of the sports landscape of the Tricity.
When will the Sopot Grand Prix take place?
28th Grand Prix of Sopot named after Janusz Sidła will take place on Sunday, June 14. The competition is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. at the Leśny Stadium in Sopot.
Everything indicates that fans can expect several hours of high-level sport, competition between leading Polish athletes and performances by athletes who will fight for medals in the largest international events in the coming months.
