George Russell left no doubt who was the strongest driver in Saturday’s qualifying in Barcelona. The Briton confirmed his excellent pace throughout the weekend and took pole position for the Catalan Grand Prix. Mercedes can celebrate a double success, although the highlight of the session was also Charles Leclerc’s dangerous accident.

George Russell sealed Mercedes’ dominance

From the first training sessions, Mercedes showed a very competitive pace on the track near Barcelona. George Russell looked particularly good, as he was regularly in the lead and seemed to be in full control of the car.

Qualifying was an opportunity to confirm this advantage and the Briton did not disappoint. Although the fight for the top positions was extremely close, it was Russell who performed best in the decisive moments. Thanks to this, he won the starting position and created an excellent starting position before Sunday’s race.

Hamilton kept pace with his rival for a long time

Lewis Hamilton sent a strong signal already in the first part of qualifying. The Ferrari driver set the fastest time and overtook Russell by less than a tenth of a second. However, the differences were minimal, which promised an exciting fight in the next segments of the session.

In Q2, Russell came back to the fore and this time he was at the top of the table. Ferrari was still very close to Mercedes, and Charles Leclerc was also in the fight for the top positions. Everything pointed to the fact that the pole position would be decided by details.

Charles Leclerc’s accident interrupted the fight for pole position

The key moment of qualifying came at the beginning of Q3. Charles Leclerc lost control of the car and hit the barriers with great force. The accident resulted in an immediate red flag and interruption of the session.

The Monegasque rider thus ended his participation in the qualifying round, ending his chances of fighting for first place. For Ferrari it was a serious blow, because previously the team’s pace allowed them to even think about starting from the front row.

Before the resumption of the competition, Oscar Piastri was the highest placed, but most drivers had not yet completed representative laps. This meant that the most important decisions were yet to come.

Russell didn’t give his rivals a chance

After the session resumed, Russell quickly showed his abilities. First he took the lead and then improved his result, reaching 1:14.679. It was a lap to which none of the rivals found an answer.

Hamilton was the closest. The Briton fought for pole position until the very end and ultimately lost to his compatriot by only 0.064 seconds. Such a small difference shows how even the competition was at the top.

Third place went to Andrea Kimi Antonelli. The young Mercedes driver again confirmed his enormous potential, but this time he had to acknowledge the superiority of his more experienced teammate.

Mercedes sends a signal before the race

Russell’s good form and Antonelli’s presence in third position make Mercedes one of the main favorites at Sunday’s Catalan Grand Prix. The Briton not only won pole position, but also won the internal duel with his younger teammate, who has been increasingly asserting his position in recent weeks.

Behind the top three were Lando Norris, Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar, which promises a very interesting fight for the podium. However, if Russell maintains the pace he showed throughout the weekend, he may have the perfect opportunity to make up for the losses in the general classification and remind everyone that he still counts in the fight for the highest goals.
