A bizarre piece of World Cup history was written during the United States’ group stage match against Australia centering not on the players, but on German referee Felix Zwayer.
A drastic halt to the action
With the match heading into its final stretch, play had to be abruptly halted due to an unusual casualty, the referee himself. Zwayer suddenly went down on the pitch after suffering a severe muscle cramp.
The scene that followed was a mix of unexpected sportsmanship and touchline scrambling. One of the assistant referees immediately rushed over to help stretch Zwayer’s leg while several players from both sides offered assistance.
Fourth official Katya Garcia then ran onto the pitch to hand the central referee an energy drink. Fortunately the quick medical intervention worked and Zwayer recovered to finish the match, receiving a warm round of applause from the American crowd.
“Embarrassing”: Rooney pulverizes the match official
The incident quickly caught the attention of global media. According to the British newspaper The Mirror, a match commentator expressed utter shock noting they had never seen a referee suffer a debilitating cramp during a game before.
Former England and Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney working as a tournament analyst, took a far more cynical view of the situation.
“It’s embarrassing, to be honest. Maybe referees need to start getting hydration and cooling breaks just like the players do” Rooney remarked sarcastically.
USMNT March On to the knockout stages
Despite the late-game officiating drama, the United States executed their game plan perfectly to secure a 2-0 victory.
The Americans broke the deadlock courtesy of an own goal from Australian defender Cameron Burgess. They later doubled their lead when Alex Freeman found the back of the net, a goal that was ultimately validated following a lengthy Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review.
