This is a huge blow to the leader of the MotoGP general classification. Marco Bezzecchi will not start in Sunday’s Czech Grand Prix after a controversial incident during the sprint in Brno. The Italian Aprilia rider was disqualified for unsportsmanlike conduct towards a track official after his fall.

Bezzecchi excluded from the Czech GP

Saturday’s MotoGP sprint in Brno ended dramatically for Marco Bezzecchi. The leader of the general classification of the world championship was in fifth position and was counting on further valuable points in the fight for the title.

On the penultimate lap, the Italian crashed in the third corner. The Aprilia motorcycle went off the track and stopped in a gravel trap. A moment later, a situation occurred that turned out to have much more serious consequences than the error on the track itself.

Controversial incident after fall

After the fall, Bezzecchi moved towards his motorcycle. Track officials started the standard procedure of securing the machine, but the competitor reacted very nervously.

The recordings, which quickly found their way online, showed him clashing with one of the orderlies. The judges found that the official who was trying to secure the motorcycle after falling off the track had been pushed and hit.

The judges made a harsh decision

On Saturday evening, Bezzecchi was summoned before the MotoGP judging panel. After analyzing the materials and listening to the player’s explanations, a decisive decision was made.

The Italian was suspended for the remainder of the racing weekend. In practice, this means excluding him from Sunday’s Czech Grand Prix and not being able to score points in the main race.

The regulations left no room for leniency

The judges invoked the provision regarding behavior that harms the reputation of the championship, the prestige of the discipline and the safety of people participating in the race weekend.

In their opinion, Bezzecchi’s reaction after the fall exceeded acceptable limits. The case was treated very seriously because it did not concern sports competition, but the contact of the competitor with the person responsible for track safety.

Aprilia appealed against the penalty

The Aprilia team immediately exercised its right to appeal. The Italian team hoped that the penalty would be lessened or waived, which would allow Bezzecchi to start in Sunday’s race.

However, the appeal was unsuccessful. The judges’ decision was upheld and the championship leader lost the right to continue participating in the round in Brno.

Possible next stage of the case

Bezzecchi and Aprilia can still take the case to the International Court of Arbitration in Lausanne. Such a move could lead to a temporary suspension of the sentence until a final decision is made.

However, this solution would involve risks. If the Tribunal upheld the judges’ position, the athlete could serve his penalty on another race weekend. There would also be the possibility of a harsher verdict.

A big problem for the MotoGP leader

Bezzecchi’s absence from the Czech Grand Prix could have huge consequences for the fight for the world championship. The Italian leads the general classification, but losing the full points race could quickly change the balance of power.

This is also a difficult moment for Aprilia. The team loses its leader in a round that could have helped solidify its position in the season. Sunday’s race in Brno may therefore have not only sporting but also psychological significance for the rest of the championship.
