The Egyptian national team dramatically booked their spot in the World Cup Round of 16 on Friday after an epic, record breaking knockout battle.
The Pharaohs have officially joined a legendary tier of continental football. By overcoming their opponents in a nerve wracking penalty shootout, Egypt became only the fifth African nation to ever win a World Cup knockout match.
They now stand proudly alongside Cameroon (1990), Senegal (2002), Ghana (2010) and Morocco (2022, 2026).
Furthermore, this dramatic victory marks the first time in tournament history that two African nations have won a knockout game in a single edition following Morocco’s recent success. Egypt also became the third African team to ever endure a World Cup penalty shootout joining the elite company of the Atlas Lions and the Black Stars.

Unbelievable Goal Milestones
The match itself produced statistical anomalies that will live forever in football folklore. Dynamic midfielder Emam Ashour scored Egypt’s first knockout stage goal since Abdulrahman Fawzi’s famous brace against Hungary way back in the 1934 tournament.
This unbelievable 92 year gap sets the absolute record for the longest time between two knockout goals for any single nation in World Cup history.
On the flip side of the drama, defender Mohamed Hany unluckily became only the second player in history to score two own goals in a single World Cup edition matching a grim 1966 record set by Bulgaria’s Ivan Vutsov. Hany’s defensive mishap also contributed to a historic tournament total of 13 own goals officially making the 2026 edition the highest scoring tournament for own goals in football history.
