CAF President Patrice Motsepe outlined an ambitious strategy for African football during a major press conference this week.
Speaking during a key media briefing, Motsepe asserted that Africa possesses all the raw talent required to dominate global football without trying to replicate foreign icons.
Instead of searching for another Lionel Messi, he argued the continent must focus on developing homegrown giants in the mold of Samuel Eto’o, Sadio Mané and Mohamed Salah.
The CAF chief stressed that targeted investments in grassroots academies, modern infrastructure and local competitions remain the true foundation for long-term international success.

World Cup validation & tournament expansion
Motsepe highlighted Africa’s rapid progress on the world stage declaring an African nation is closer than ever to lifting football’s ultimate trophy. He specifically lauded the standout performances of Egypt and Morocco during the World Cup 2026 in North America, pointing to the Pharaohs’ thrilling 3-2 battle against champions Argentina as proof that African teams can stand toe to toe with traditional heavyweights.
Additionally, Motsepe endorsed expanding the Africa Cup of Nations AFCON field in future editions arguing that broader participation accelerates competitive development across lesser-known footballing nations.
