A recurring nightmare: The international financial disasters haunting Zamalek

FIFA imposed a 3 window transfer ban on Zamalek on Friday after the club failed to pay Swedish side AIK.

The global governing body added the White Knights to its official registration ban database on Friday following a failure to settle outstanding debts. The sanction directly stems from the transfer of Palestinian forward Omar Faraj from AIK Football.

FIFA handed down the 3 window transfer restriction after Zamalek failed to remit the agreed transfer fee which stands at $1.1 million.

CAF Champions League status intact

Despite this severe registration blow, the White Knights’ upcoming continental return remains protected. Club officials previously confirmed that all outstanding financial cases required for obtaining the CAF license were fully resolved prior to the official 31 March 2026 deadline.

This means Zamalek’s long-awaited return to the CAF Champions League after a 3 season absence remains intact though they will be strictly barred from registering new players for domestic and continental competitions until the debt is cleared.

Resolving debt to clear restrictions

This is far from the first time the Cairo giants have navigated a FIFA-enforced registration freeze. Under current regulations, the 3 window ban is a maximum administrative penalty rather than a permanent sentence.

The moment Zamalek successfully transfers the $1.1 million to AIK’s bank accounts, FIFA will instantly lift the transfer ban allowing the club to resume player registrations.

A recurring nightmare for the White Knights

Financial disputes over international transfers have plagued Zamalek repeatedly over the past decade.

The club faced a nearly identical nightmare in late 2023 when FIFA hit them with a transfer ban over unpaid dues owed to Sporting CP regarding the return of club legend Mahmoud “Shikabala” alongside debts to former player Benjamin Acheampong.

During that crisis, the board was forced to launch emergency fundraising campaigns to pay over $2.5 million to lift the freeze and sign new players in January 2024.
